Much of our generation grew up with war. A significant fraction of our state chapter was born sometime around 9/11 and have not seen a single year of “peace.” Even when troops are home, it is hard to feel like we are at peace when there are continuous drone strikes on civilians all over the Middle East.
Hundreds of thousands of lives have already been taken for a conflict that is no fault of their own. Hundreds of thousands will die as a result of this completely avoidable war.
And if there is anything we have learned over the past two years, it is that people are not their governments. Civilians should not have to suffer as a consequence of the actions of their government officials.
When we talk about ending gun violence, we are also talking about the violence that happens overseas, to bodies of people that are deemed “lesser” because they are “not our own.”
No atrocity of this kind should happen anywhere, at any time.
Wars do not benefit civilians. They benefit the military industrial complex and contractors, while civilians are killed, dying preventable deaths.
It's time to put an end to senseless violence on all fronts: we oppose war with Iran—and all wars.
